What happens to 'me' when I sleep? - Post 5
Prof. Earlshaw and I were out of active correspondence for quite a number of years, though passively we were aware of each others work. We also sent each other our thoughts on the common theme of interest from time to time. And the matter rested in that state. Somehow, both of us knew that we were each involved in very deep work that, for the moment at least, required us to keep to ourselves. However, we knew deep within that one day or the other, unexpectedly, we would catch up to share new insights. And it happened sooner than we could guess. And surprisingly, instead of on FaceTime, it was face to face.
One early morning, I looked at my inbox and noticed an invitation to a seminar to be held in the city later that week. As I was used to getting quite a lot of emails like that, I ignored it after a swift glance. But later that day, somehow, my thoughts continued to return to that email. Finally, I decided to see it once again and delete it once and for all, to prevent getting further distracted. As I clicked on the email once again, I was startled to find that the image of the speaker appeared quite familiar. But the name of the speaker did not indicate that I had known him in any manner. I downloaded the poster and zoomed in on the image. Lo and behold, it appeared really familiar. It was unmistakably that of Prof. Earlshaw. But how could that be? If was in any case visiting, he would certainly have let me know before anyone else. After all I was the one he had close contact with especially in a real intellectual and cultural sense, as he had told me earlier. Nevertheless, perhaps he would be visiting and might have wanted to give me a surprise. So I surmised. And as it often happens, synchronicity kicked in immediately and I received a call on my cell phone that even before I picked up, I knew it was Prof. Earlshaw. As I took the phone and spoke, it indeed was he.
We exchanged many a pleasant greeting and pleasantries and spoke for quite a while enquiring about our mutual interests and work. As it was quite a number of years and not months, we had each gone ahead in several different directions in our work on cognitive neuroscience and education and Eastern wisdom. I appraised him of my new breakthroughs and asked him about his work on experiential neuropsychology.
And that became the topic of the new set of blog posts I began to write.
